Rengel's Chapter 8 Summary:

After talking about residential design, this chapter focuses on the non- residential design which is the office space, the store space (retail), and the restaurant.
Designing for these kind of spaces, is not the same as designing for residential projects, because it does not only serve one client, a couple, or one family, but its purpose is to serve the workers, the visitors, the community, which is mostly everyone.

Work environments:

We have to be able to provide a space where workers can focus on work and be productive. Plus, these days, more and more companies want their workers to work on teams.
There is a need to balance private and public spaces. However the privacy is not the same as the privacy in a residential project where people are completely isolated, but it is shown in a subtle and thoughtful way (semi-private with workstations). We also would want to provide rooms where the company can have group meetings with either the conference type of room or informal rooms where it can receive and gather multiple people at a same time. We also have to think about the circulation aspect of a worker for example from all these different spaces by trying to make it cohesive and logical.
Plus, we need to think about the style of the company by thinking and answering questions like what do the company want to promote? What are the values of the company? What image of them would they want to show to the public? etcetera...
All of these will surely dictate what kind of furniture and design will be best for any kind of office spaces.

This space is an example of an informal space where a group of workers can work together by brainstorming and exchanging ideas.

Store designs:

When designing a store, we ave to think about how to attract potential buyers to come and enter the space where the owner and the employees are trying to promote products and items ( that are categorized either as staple, convenience, or impulse). To promote well, some designs involve a lot of strategies such as having transparent conditions which will let know the potential clients what is inside which will then lead to increase and intensify their curiosity that will eager to come in. Or having miscellaneous items near the cashier to get you to get more. Stores, in general have display areas, an entrance, a cash wrap and a stock room. But some stores depending on what they sell such as a clothes shop, there would be more rooms such as a fitting area. Circulation is also an important aspect of a store design because if everything is placed well, it can help a client go deeper and deeper into the store. For that, it can either be done in a linear way, a loop, in a nodal, in an organic linear, in a diagonal, or organic free.

Restaurants:

This other space is basically designed with a kitchen, a dining room, a bar area and restrooms. Generally designers have to provide a space where there is a good flow when it comes to design in general, and circulation, the location and size of the kitchen, plus its relationship with the dining room and a space where the speed of service can be ensured. We also need to design a restaurant where we can recognize its type such as for example, whether it is a fast food restaurant or a family restaurant and for that we need to consider what type of ambience we need to set in the dining room.

Nussbaumer's Chapter 8 Summary:

Rire de bon coeur

This chapter focuses now on environmental considerations, which means surrounding factors that can affect or are affecting humans on a more physiological scale ( which means that affect us psycholgically, physically and behaviorally). These surrounding factors that we need to take in consideration are mostly invisible ( intangible) which includes then acoustics (relating to sound; auditory), hazards, indoor air quality, color, and illumination ( The act of lighting to make something visible or bright; the stat of being lit).
This chapter additionally addresses the multiple threats we need to avoid when we design a building for other people to use, when it comes to the mechanical, thermal, electrical, chemical and infectious ones.

  1. I really like how you have multiple examples to show for design and how it can even resemble residential design. Design has to make people comfortable.
