Commercial environments include every kind of space that is non-residential, such as:
- offices
- hospitality ( like hotels and restaurants)
- retail (clothing stores)
- institutional (schools)
- health care ( hospitals)]
- others
Designing for commercial environments is different from designing residential projects as we have seen precedently. Designing for commercial environments, is challenging in a lot of ways because the design is served to please a good number of people, and not just one or a few. In all of these distinctive commercial spaces, there is a need to balance well the private/personal and the public/interactive spaces ( we need to look at the proxemics to evaluate that aspect).

This describes the study of proxemics. |
But there is also a need to serve well the staff, the clients, the visitors, the patients, teachers, students, etcetera. Plus not only do we have to serve well all these people, we also have to consider "the diversity of cultures, ages, gender, and more."
The design needs to be universal, but also safe, secure, comfortable, accessible, efficient and overall pleasant aesthetically.
Offices designs should help the workers or employees to be productive in what they are doing. Communication and social interaction in this environment, is very important in that kind of environment, so we need to provide spaces that will facilitate these interactions.
We also need to accommodate diversity in the workplace, when it comes for example to a culturally diverse group, or a generational differences within a group.
Hospitality environments should, through the design, make the guest, visitors, or clients be welcomed into the space and feel kind of at home to be able to be comfortable. A sense of privacy needs to be achieved in a public space.
In retail, the design needs to feed the curiosity of the stranger outside the store, for him or her o be able to come in. The organization of the space should be strategic, in order for the client to buy something.
In institutional spaces, there is a lot of variety within the people because the ages differ and their needs to due to that aspect. Younger kids will mostly need a space where they can move, interact with others by playing and learn because they are developing their senses. Colors will play an important part in that field.
In health care, the spaces need to be placed in an organized matter, especially when there is an urgent situation or a emergency. These spaces should make the people come in safe and secure and in good hands.
Other commercial environments can include museums, churches etc...

Furniture will be the key to a good design and it will help distinguish what kind of commercial environment you are in. |
Martha, I enjoyed how you listed multiple examples of commercial design with pictures and specific solutions. Including the reminder of proxemics, was very helpful because commercial design buildings are used by multiple people with multiple different viewpoints, genders, ages, and generations.
ReplyDeleteMartha,
ReplyDeleteVery good summary and observations of the commercial setting and considerations that need to be made to address all people that may be in the space. The whole topic of proxemics is very critical to commercial settings. Providing spaces that are private, personal or public could be the challenge of commercial design. I appreciate your thoughts on this topic
