Nussbaumer' s Chapter 11 summary:
Interior designers have to provides spaces that will give the users a great experience. Especially in
work environments, it is important to give the users that great experience, because most of the "people spend more time at work than in their homes".
Ergonomics (the study of people's efficiency in their working environment), are important to include in the design of an office, so that the workers will feel comfortable which will enable them to be productive. We have to think about the choice of furniture and lightning and how we place them, when it comes to height for example. We should want to avoid inaccessibility, physical/ mental stress, eyestrain, and poor postures, to avoid injuries and health issues. Providing a safe and secure environment is then one of the main goals when it comes to design an office.
The main difficulty/challenge for interior designers is to provide a workplace or workstation that would fit everyone and that is why we have to make or assign furniture that would allow people to adjust to it.
Yes, indeed the people in the workplace come from all kind of social and cultural backgrounds, all ages and genders, all sizes, etcetera...And for that we need to accommodate spaces while keeping in mind the diversity of people. Plus, there is usually a variety of titles and functions in the workplace too, so we also need to provide spaces for that. So in response to those needs we need to provide private and public spaces where the workers can work individually and collaboratively.

This picture illustrates diversity in the workplace. Workers have different races, ages and social backgrounds, but collaborate and work together in order to finish a successful project. |

Martha,
ReplyDeleteWhat a thoughtful summary of Nussbaumer Chapter 11. I appreciate your summary of the care that must be considered when designing for the office. Proper ergonomics will provide functional and healthy furniture options for workers. As you mentioned adjustable furniture will be helpful to ergonomic considerations.
I also like your considerations for diversity in the work force such as different genders, generational differences, cultural and social differences must be accounted for.
Also providing for the different personality types such as extroverted or introverted spaces.
Office design is very complex- I am excited to see what you have come up with for the NEXT project. What thoughts you are thinking of for that situation and how this information applies to the NEXT project.
Martha, I appreciated that you pointed out how extremely diverse the office is. There is no such thing as a perfect piece of office furniture for everyone, and so that is where Interior Designers need to help out clients. This just overall reinforces that an interior designer's job is to create a one of a kind experience for the client, while keeping them safe and secured.
